The Original book summarised
1- Dorothy is an orphan, Lives with Aunt Em and Uncle Henry in poor part Kansas, one room shack. Life is hard, everything is grey.Toto, her dog, makes Dorothy happy. the cyclone approaches, Aunt Em goes in to the cellar. Uncle Henry sees to the live stock, Dorothy collects Toto from under the bed, but doesn't reach storm cellar before the house gets lifted up in the air, carried along on the top of a cyclone. She falls asleep.
House lands on top of wicked witch of the east in blue munchkin land. She has been nasty to the munchkins so they are happy.
Good witch of the north, (Old, White Hair, Kind) gives D a magic kiss on her forehead for protection. Tells Dorothy that to get back home she needs to see Wizard of Oz because he is most powerful.
W of E has SILVER shoes that D borrows to look smart to see the wizard.
also changes her dress, from cupboard in house.
Meets Scarecrow. Only just been made and was aware of the process. Wants brains instead of straw. Scared the crows until a big one pecks him.
they both meet the woodman.
He was a real person who loved a munchkin maid who said she would marry him if he made them a house. Maids employer didn't want to let her go, got WWofE to enchamt his axe which cult off bits of him which he kept replacing with tin kuntil he was all tin, then had no heart and didn't then care about the Munckin girl. She may be waiting for him somewhere.
the three meet the lion.
He was born scared, but everyone expected him to be fierce, so he got by with raring loudly at people who then just ran away.
Scarecrow always solves problems
Tinman is careful of other creatures.
Lion always does brave things.
Dorothy always had the power to go home.
on the journey to oz they meet
1-the Kalidahs, Bears with tiger heads.
2- The deadly poppy field, but saved by fieldmice.
3- the big River where Scarecrow gets stuck and saved by a stork
they get to oz, where they meet a gatekeeper and a nice maid. They are made to wear green glasses, everyone does thats what makes it green.
they are allowed to see the wizard one at a time, one each day. the wizard looks different to each of them.

told Dorothy, the tinman and scarecrow to kill www. told lion to bring him the evidence that it has been done.
they leave to do their task, but www has an all seeing eye, and sends wolves which woodman kills with his axe; Crows that Scarecrow kills; Bees which tinman kills while scarecrows straw shield the other two; sends winkies with spears which lion frightens away.
WWW has a magic Golden cap she uses to summon the flying monkeys, she can only use it one last time (Long story).

Couldn't harm Dorothy because she is protected by the power of good, so they ldump her on the door step of www's yellow castle. She is put to work in the kitchens, but when www tries to steal D's shoes, D throws a bucket of water over her, and she melts into brown gooey stuff (like brown sugar).
Dorothy frees Lion, finds winkies, rescues Tinman who is fixed by the winkies and they all find and re-assemble scarecrow.
they live happily in the yellow castle for a while then D remembers aunt Em and the promise to the
wizard. She takes the golden cap with her. they try to go back to Oz.
they walk away from the yellow land to a red land and get lost so they call the field mice who tell them they are going the wrong way. D summons monkeys who take them to emerald city where they discover that the Wizard is a fake. "I am a good man, but a bad wizard". He is a ventiroquist that came to Oz by balloon.
He gives the scarecrow a BRAN new brain with pins and nails to keep him sharp.
gives the tinman a padded heart and makes the lion a drink, because Courage always comes from the inside.
He arranges for another balloon to be made to take him and D back to Kansas, but one again Toto runs off at the last moment making D miss the lift home. They go to look for the good with of the South, (Glinda) and pass through some other countries. When they find her she tells D that the shoes can get her home.
Tinman becomes king of the winkies
Lion is King of the Beasts
Dorothy gets home to find Uncle Henry has built a new house, and aunt Em is really pleased to see her.
Wizard appoints scarecrow ruler of oz
