Feel free to read any interpretation of the Wizard of Oz before writing here. but it's better to read the book or watch the film as they are the interpretations the world has in its mind.
After looking at the book we start the story in Oz, introduce the characters and then have Dorothy arrive later. Some of the scenes will be scenes that are "wiki pages" in the performance.
Scene One
We see scarecrow being built, Witch of East arrives and is nasty. Binman is told off and cursed by Witch and turned into rubbish. Lyin is also mistreated as he is thrown out of Aston for being too clever. Witch is nasty to munchkins. Big dance big threats Witch is going to be really nasty. BANG! The house arrives.
scene 2 leaving Kansas FILM
(as a black and white video…. story as below)
It begins as it always does, on the green, beside the pinfold a girl called Dorothy Gale lives in Kansas on a farm. She lives with her Aunt Emily and Uncle Henry. Her mother (Goody Jarland-Judy Garland) has died and her father joined a motorcycle gang. A twister appears when she is away from the house and before she can reach the safety of the storm cellar she is sucked up and carried with the house and Toto.
Scene Three
It is explained to Dorothy that she is in Oz. In landing she has killed kills the Wicked Witch of the East and thus liberates the Munchkins from her/their reign of terror. The good witch of the North appears, Glinda, She tells Dorothy to go to the Emerald City by following a yellow brick road to find a wizard in order to try and get home. Glinda gives her a kiss on the forehead to protect her on her travels.
So all I have to do is have your thanks and return to Kansas. It is explained and no one has heard of Kansas she will have to go to the Emerald city…. but how … we have a road… a blue sign…. a red traffic light and a yellow brick road. Should she follow the blue sign? Wait for the green traffic light.
unusually Dorothy meets all three freinds in the munchkin village.
She meets the Scarecrow on a pole in a field he is a rubbish he is more scared of the crows than they are of him. Dorothy tell a him about the wizard and he thinks he can help him too and give him a brain. (ref to scarecrow trail) He Thinks the wizard can hep him too. He is constantly making it clear that he doesn't need a brain, he just lacks the awareness of it.
She meets the bin man who thinks he can not be loved but he is a very nice person and not a monster, he just has to be made aware of it.
She meets the lion/lyin' who claims he is the wizard and says he will fix everything
Scene Four
They pass through a forest with "Lions and Tigers and Bears" and are chased by a liontigerbear, (who too may just be misunderstood). the Lion demonstrates he actually is brave, they have to cross a river where the road has fallen in and the scarecrow demonstrates his intelligence by thinking of making a raft. Ten the witch send poppies that send then to sleep and the Tinman shows his heart by carrying the lion and Dorothy whilst the Scarecrow carries the Tinman's Axe (carefully)
Scene Five
They arrive at the emerald city - they are given the run around as Wizard is so important (useless) that no one is allowed to see him. He sneds them to degeat the witch, Dorothy does it with water
Scene Six
they see the real wizard, When she does see him he pretends to be omnipotent but they see it all bluster. She discovers she had the power to get home all along. Glinda returns in this scene.
Scene Seven
When she gets home she finds that the people of OZ are like back home …. we did this before in Alice. We need to make it very obvious cos I think they thought we were just short of actors. Dorothy can say, to each character your just like…because.
